Lisl Ponger’s work addresses stereotypes, racism, and the construction of the gaze. It is located at the intersection between art, art history, anthropology, and ethnology in the mediums of photography, film, and installation. For example, her project Mukul Museum (Museum for Foreign and Familiar cultures) (2014– ) explores the constructed cultural identity for her own temporarily ethnographic museum.
In the exhibition, she presents a photo series of Aus- trian people who love foreign cultures. They are dis- guised as the foreigners that they aspire to be, wea- ring foreign clothes and posing like them. Ponger carefully arranged the settings to look like specific countries or regions that the models love; no matter how exotic they look, all the photos were taken within Austria.

Ponger lives and works in Vienna, Austria. Her work is extensively exhibited at the Secession, the Welt Museum in Vienna, the Kunsthaus in Dresden, the CUC in Berlin, the Anren Biennale in China, the National Museum of World Cultures in Stockholm, and others.
