The Domestic Affairs project started as a short text about twelve friends who meet one night to hold a farewell party for the couple, Wall Street Bull and Colonial Matrix of Power, who are leaving Vienna because of the work. During the party, the friends discovered who they were and learned each other’s secrets. The photos with texts connote a variety of fables regarding post-colonial figures, dressed in extreme and tacky costumes utilising ‘domestic’ objects in domestic settings. As a final—and most important—touch, the performance uses a huge loudspeaker and features a stage with primitive decorations.

His work elaborates upon narrative writing exercises and reflects on the mechanisms that construct the notion of historicity, knowledge, memory and identity. Such themes are often developed as fiction or, in recent work, as installations with which the public can interact.

Oscar Cueto was born in Mexico City and received a master’s degree at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna. He lives and works in Vienna.

Ausgangspunkt für das Projekt Domestic Affairs war ein kurzer Text über zwölf Freund*innen, die sich zur Abschiedsparty für Wall Street Bull und Colonial Matrix of Power treffen; der Arbeit wegen verlässt das Paar Wien. Im Lauf der Party finden die Freund*innen mehr über einander heraus und erfahren die Geheim- nisse der anderen. Die Bilder und Texte erzählen eine Reihe von Fabeln über postkoloniale Figuren in extre- men und stillosen Kostümierungen, wobei Haushalts- gegenstände in häuslicher Umgebung zum Einsatz kommen. Als abschließenden Höhepunkt verwendet die Performance einen riesigen Lautsprecher auf einer Bühne mit primitiver Ausstattung.

Cuetos Arbeit basiert auf narrativen Schreibübungen und reflektiert Mechanismen zur Konstruktion von Begriffen wie Historizität, Wissen, Erinnerung und Identität. Diese Themen werden oft literarisch entwi- ckelt oder, wie in seinen neueren Arbeiten, als inter- aktive Installationen.

 Oscar Cueto wurde in Mexico City geboren und absolvierte ein Masterstudium an der Universität für Angewandte Kunst in Wien. Er lebt und arbeitet in Wien.
